But his face rings a bell…

Sunday, 3 May 2009

Wait a minute. I’m just looking at the finalists in the Monte Carlo EPT, which is in play right now.

Have a look at this and scroll down to seat 6, Daniel Zink of Germany. Is that the same guy in my “picture diary” of Day 2, the second picture, of the uber-modern players ? Might I have accidentally snapped the winner of the 2009 Grand Final, on route to victory? At this point, I have to funk for Zink just for the coincidence factor - like people who had old childhood photos of Princess Diana. But maybe it’s someone else? There’s another picture of Daniel Zink here.Opinions please…

certainly looks a lot like him and it says he’s 24 - although when i saw the uber-modern players picture i wondered why you were playing with three dudes who looked like they had just that morning been expelled from school for having bad hair.  (im assuming hoody dude had bad hair - why else would he wear a hood inside?)  how highly did you rate him as a player?

It’s the same guy!  Very different day.

1st!  yes i would say it’s the same guy - you could have at least included a link to your pic of him to make it easier to compare, honestly, you’re such an internet donk sometimes…..

Yep Vix, that’s him, same red wristband on his left arm if you look at the two pics.

btw, did you see that danny gans died? can’t believe we never got around to seeing his show all those times we were in vegas…. i read it was some complication with his glands… too soon?

Victoria Coren at 6:55 pm on May 3rd, 2009

Wow - Danny Gans - just looked it up, that’s so weird. I’ve got stuff about him in my book, I guess I’d better change it or take it out or something - it’s not horrible, just looks weird if he’s, you know, dead. I was reading about him last week cos he just moved to Encore, I was thinking what an odd thing to do when the Mirage had named a whole theatre after him. I wonder what happened? He was only 52. What with him and Siegfried (or was it Roy?) it starts to feel like the Mirage is kind of a bok place to work.

PS. Think have amended post to add link to that picture - you’re right you’re right, am techno-moron…

I know nothing about poker and considering my recent mistake with the Channel4 announcer lady, I’m probably not the best person to ask, but with my best impression of Grissom I think it’s the same person.
They seem an unhappy bunch, doesn’t anyone ever smile at these poker tournaments?

It was Roy not Siegfried that got mauled by the tiger.

Dan at 10:20 pm on May 3rd, 2009

Scrap my previous comment. I’ve just realised it could be his twin brother!

Andy W at 10:59 pm on May 3rd, 2009

No, wait !  From Pete B’s blog :

“bumped into Daniel Zink on the way back (I had seen his twin brother this morning at breakfast) and asked him how he got on”

They’re twins !  That’s thrown the cat among the pigeons !

Andy.

In his bio, below his image at seat #6 (first link) it says he has a twin brother, but it doesnt state whether they are identical or not. So the other images might be Daniel or Sebastien or a clone of either.
Hard luck with the tourney by the way…..

Victoria Coren at 12:19 pm on May 4th, 2009

Twins! It’s like a lazily-written detective story!

What brilliant poker strategies could be hatched from this genetic coincidence. One twin could play super-tight and the other crazy-loose, then they secretly swap tables halfway through day 3 and do everyone’s heads in…

AndytheDealer at 10:17 pm on May 4th, 2009

I think it’s Daniel’s twin on day 2.

We know the guy on day 2 is left handed.  You took that photo with your phone.  The EPT photograph shows that Daniel is right handed. So, unless the EPT snapper has turned his negative I’m sure they are different people.

My reasoning is as follows.  When players play with chips they generally do it without thinking, so unless both twins are ambidextrous, I think they’ve been rumbled.

The mnemonic could be Dr. Daniel.

Dan at 9:58 am on May 5th, 2009

I agree it’s his twin, partly because it makes it less of a coincidence (thought I’m succumbing to gambler’s fallacy there I think), and partly because his demeanour is so different.

I’m actually considering writing a poker potboiler now, to include accurate descriptions of play. Perhaps will leave twins out though?

Andy W at 4:32 pm on May 5th, 2009

Identical twins open up all kinds of prop-betting scams.  Eg I think it was Amarillo Slim set this one up (it usually is), apparently it’s impossible to eat a quail every day for a month (because the meat is too rich or something), so Slim said I know this kid can do it, everyone’s like no way, but of course it was identical twins eating a quail every other day each.  Ship it.

Andy.

I found a piece about the twins below that solves the mystery:
http://www.pokerstarsblog.com/2007/ept-prague-double-up-for-pokerstars-poke-033374.html

One twin says: “We’re not identical twins! As some people think”. So I think all pictures that have been posted are of Daniel Zink. His brother, Sebastian, looks slightly different:

Very good Heresy, too!
