Eight Out Of Ten Cats
Thursday, 28 February 2013
Tomorrow (Friday) night on Channel 4, I’ll be having a go at Eight Out Of Ten Cats - on Jon Richardson’s team, alongside the comedian Rob Beckett, v. Sean Lock’s team with Jack Dee and DJ Matt Edmondson. I might be a bit far out of my comfort zone on this one, since it really is a pure comedy show and I’m very much not a pure comedian (or any other sort of comedian) (or any other sort of pure), but what the hell, I’m a gambler.
I think I’ve gambled slightly badly on the month of March, though - the London Poker Festival is kicking off next week and I’d so desperately love to have nothing else to do except play poker, but - in a bout of terrible timetabling - I seem to have accidentally agreed to do a panel show, a quiz show, a radio show and make a TV documentary at the same time. Maybe it will be my secret advantage over my poker opponents? Maybe they’ll have had SO MUCH sleep, and SUCH HEALTHY eating arrangements, and SUCH CLEAR heads for the game, that they’ll overthink all the pots and knock themselves out, while I’ll be so hungry, angry, tired and breathless that I’ll simply be FUELLED into a series of big money finals?
Maybe.

I’m intrigued by the documentary comment - what is the subject to be…?
If you’re nervous, good luck on the show. You may not be a comic, but you’re witty, and they’ve had Jedward, Jamelia and folks from TOWIE (bad acronym but better than the long version) on regularly…

Healthy? Well rested? Which poker players are you hanging out with!? :D

Hi strangely. The documentary’s about the history of BBC TV Centre - I think the details will now be up on the news page of this site?
Matt - they’re all bloody healthy nowadays. All mountain climbing and energy drinks. Something’s gone horribly wrong.

‘not a pure comedian ... or any other sort of pure’ That’s why we like you so much. Naturally funny and honest but kind.
Wondering if you were tempted to help sweet, confused Jon with his definitions for physical contact?

Hi Vicky, just wondered if you’ve ever played that NY Times stats wiz kid Nate Silver at poker?
I wondered what you made of him.

Hi Meg. I don’t think I’ve ever played with that guy, no…

Are you doing anything for International Women’s Day?

Hi Victoria, I’ve just read ‘For Richer, For Poorer’ in two days - I simply couldn’t put it down! I knew you could write but wasn’t prepared for the emotional rollercoaster it took me on. It’s been a while since I’ve read such a well written, moving, touching and funny memoir - I felt strangely bereft when I finished- so I just wanted to say thank you very much for writing and sharing it. Best of luck with the next tournament & well done with today’s - between Twitter and the book, I even vaguely understand some of the poker language!

I just managed to watch your 8 Out Of 10 Cats appearance (I’m in the US and have to do some dodgy things in order to watch UK teevee) and I have to say I thought you were delightful. And I’m in complete agreement with your theories on the best ways to make friends (hiding someone’s possession in the hedges and then “finding” it for him/her—ingenious!)
