New Only Connect Tonight

Monday, January 4 2010

At the terrible risk of posting an obstacle between the casual browser and Peaches Geldof discussing the Large Hadron Collider (see thread before this one), I’m just going to mention, for anyone who missed this month’s news link, that a new series of Only Connect starts tonight at 8.30pm on BBC Four and continues every Monday at the same time. I believe the first episode features the Music Lovers and the Archers Admirers: two excellent teams. Also, this is a longer series than last time so there is a “pre-quarter final” round, meaning the first few episodes will be slightly easier than last time.

I mean… they’ll still be incredibly hard. But slightly easier than last time.

For a short while.

I’m ashamed to say I don’t understand Only Connect. I watch it and I think to myself that this must be how Peaches feels every time she leaves the house.

Indeed. It makes me feel as thick as Peaches Geldof actually is.

Devastated to hear you say tonight (or at least when the programme was recorded) that no-one calls you darling. I would love to, but I fear my wife might kill us both.

Sorry to go off topic but this is driving me crazy. What/who is track 19 on the ‘for richer, for poorer’ CD?

Happy New Year Vicky,

I think I too am lacking when it comes to YouTube as I can’t find any of the old series of the show, and as I live in Poland the beeb won’t let me watch it online. Boo. Get a friend to upload a few episodes for you on YouTube!

Victoria Coren says:

Hi Mark. I believe track 19 is the amazing “Only New York Going On” by Francis Dunnery - had you checked your copy of For Richer, For Poorer, you’d find the clue at chapter 14… but the real detective would note that 4am is the time mentioned whenever ANYTHING IN THE BOOK happens late at night, and it’s all a nod back to chapter 14 and Mr. D…

University Challenge was on before Only Connect tonight.  I must admit that if I’d paid my Sky bill I would have been watching NCIS.
But there was a question about the Texan collider, and the team didn’t get the answer.  Which begs the question: is Peaches brainier than 4 brains at Oxford?
Probably not.
Happy New Year Victoria darling.

Hello Victoria, Happy new year, hope you (and Giles) had a nice xmas.Unfortunately I’m on the on the 2pm-10pm shift at work, and haven’t got round to buying a dvd recorder yet, so now I’m going to have to watch the 1.40am repeat. Oh and thanks once again for the lovely signed book you sent me earlier last year, I’m reading your new book at the mo, but I’m taking my time with it coz I havent a clue about anything about poker-soz.

Watched ‘Only Connect’ for the first time last night. Very enjoyable show, rubbish title. Could we have an online competition to rename it? How about ‘The Connect Factor’?

Bear Richards says:
January 6th, 2010 at 2:16 am

I’m sorry Victoria, but they have to be the worst two teams I have ever seen on your most excellent quiz. Please do not dumb it down, I know the beeb wants to attract more chavs. We still need some high brow programming for us psuedo intellectuals who like to think we are smarter than the average bear.

Just wanted to say that I’ve just finished your book and I loved it. Hope you have a great 2010.

Vix, happy snollidays
saw you on the box playing poker last night. You were doing well till you some dark glasses on. Then you lost it. Recommend putting on a more flamboyant / Elton John style pair.
Is lady Gaga a fan of yours po po po po po perhaps?

Hi Victoria, watched the new show the other night, enjoyed it as much as the first series. Gotta second the ‘don’t dumb it down’ comment above. Watched your show after universally challenged and it stretched my brain in an entirely different direction after all that cold fact recall.
Still think you need to get yourself on QI. i know that *would* be dumbing down for you but it would be a joy to behold.  have a good and profitable new year. :)

Vicky, I’d never heard your name before last night; I caught you on Late Night Poker.

Just ordered your book and look forward to reading it.

Really nice site you have here.

HA!

‘Easier’

Oh dear. I may be mentally somewhere between 7 and 12 years old.

I caught the late night repeat the other night and half way through, it started pelting it down with snow here in Weejlandia. It was all such a good and peaceful 2am that I made myself a cup of tea and some crackers with philly cheese to celebrate.

Sometimes life is perfect.

I was impressed to have got some of the answers right on Only Connect but after reading your blog now realise it won’t last long. I thought I had become a genius overnight but sadly that still remains a dream unfulfilled. Ah well, back to reading Heat magazine then!!!

Fitch says:

Happy New Year Victoria,
what a great idea to get on QI. You’d be superb. I actually got the Connect wall before both teams this time. So you must be dumbing down!
Love, Fitch.

Just saw our Ferne doing a Comic Relief Africa report - surely the hardest of all Comic Relief duties - and I have seen (and would definitely do) much worse than she did.  If Clive James had profiled Peaches, it probably wouldn’t have been half as illuminating.

Didn’t wake up this morning thinking I’d be bigging-up Ferne Cotton on Vicky Coren’s blog, but that’s life for you.

Craig says:
January 8th, 2010 at 7:44 pm

I supposed you could say Cotton reeled in Peaches and got the juice…

Or maybe not.

omg that show makes my head hurt so much...!!!
why on earth do people know such things...idiots.

still, it’s worth suffering the disturbing obscurity of the questions just to hear the hypnotic sound of your voice, it’s so posh, I love it.

p.s.

I think your sunglasses are bringing you bad luck at the poker table, you should destroy them at once.

I LOVE Only Connect! It’s one of the most underrated quizzes ever broadcast. So glad it’s back. I’m still rubbish at the connecting wall but I’m getting good at the missing vowels round!

Football, FItness, Eclipse, Wipeout: All “Total”
Wednesday, Palace, City, Villa: All Football teams

Ewan says:
January 9th, 2010 at 8:26 pm

Yeah that one was pretty easy. I was hoping to throw you off with Argyle and City. Nicely done.

MarkP says:
January 11th, 2010 at 10:15 pm

Oooh this is getting spooky, first ‘golgi’ mentioned on University Challenge and Only Connect and now ‘cakes and ale’. Do you share the same question setters; this has to be more than coincidence.

danny maris says:
January 12th, 2010 at 3:26 am

Yes, v. enjoyable Only Connect tonight. One of the geeks on the gamers side wins geek of the year contest.

You were yet again tres elegant.

Only prob - I never quite understand the rule in round one. Are you supposed to be guessing the next thing that comes up or are you supposed to be describing the whole series?

OK, it’s only a game, I know.

David Bodycombe says:
January 12th, 2010 at 9:31 am

Hi Mark,

Olav Bjortomt is the only member of our current writing team who works on both UC and OC, but the Cakes and Ale question was one we’ve had on file for quite some time and it’s just purely coincidence. Both shows are recorded by different companies at different times in different studios.

There’s been quite a spate of these in recent weeks especially between Brain of Britain and University Challenge. I guess as you listen to enough quizzes, the chance of this happening gets closer to 100%.

Hope you enjoy the rest of series 3.

Best wishes

David (OC question editor)

Matt says:

Hey Vicki,

I have to say Only Connect is a top TOP show, really enjoying it, even if it does make my brain hurt come the end.  Best of luck with the series.

Matt.

Dave Sparrow says:
January 15th, 2010 at 7:01 pm

That was the first time I’d seen the show and although it took me a while to get it, I definitely enjoyed it.

Keep up the good work V, OC is compelling viewing. I smiled at your Vinnie Jones remark on last night’s show – he’s long been top of my sh*t list, as the founder member, chairman and CEO of the “Totally-Talentless-But-Somehow-Still-A-Celebrity” Club. Why don’t you get him on the show, he could form a team with Ant & Dec :-) Any suggestions for a team name, fellow bloggers…?

Victoria,

Would you say the negative health effects of smoking are outweighed by the possibility of developing a deep, husky voice, as demonstrated by the captain of the Choirboys?

I’m thinking of taking up smoking immediately.

Victoria Coren says:

Hmm… Not sure if many people will see this because it’s an old thread, but I’ll have a go! The ones in the top line are all trees, is that right? And then you’ve got four Powells (Enoch, Baden, Robert & Colin). So that would leave Jonathan / Mohamed / David / Jonah / socks / boots / slippers / trainers.
You wouldn’t have a category of “things worn on the feet”, would you?

patrick says:
February 24th, 2010 at 2:30 pm

trees and footwear is good but one item lies in both so look out

powell is correct but there is a large bear trap beware

so that leaves the last line to get

good luck
