Only Connect App

Monday, 24 October 2011

Oh yes: at last, there is an Only Connect app!

Well, technically it’s a Connecting Wall app. For any of you who are HOOKED ON THE WALLS and find they just don’t come up fast enough on the website, this thing gives you twenty fresh new walls direct to your iPhone or iPad, and then you can get extra bundles of ten for 69p. Perfect for whiling away time on the bus, or waiting for a business meeting - or, indeed, during a business meeting, while people are DRONING ON.

You can get the app here; it’s £1.49 (but if you find that an outrage, remember you can still play walls for free on the Only Connect website. This is for the hardcore connectors whose habit cannot be satisfied by two walls a week and just need more, more, more).

Now, I’m not a very technical person and I don’t even have a smart-phone myself, so please don’t ask me any questions about whether it’s an android or an asteroid or how it works or anything like that. I just know that my lovely colleagues at Only Connect have brought out an app, and this is where you’ll find it if you’d like one. As Woody Allen said, “How do I know why there were Nazis? I don’t even know how a can opener works.”

  Happy connecting!

You’ve shattered my illusions, Victoria - I thought you knew everything!

To quote Woody Allen again, I am also at two with technology (or was it nature?) but could they not bring out an electronic game version of the Wall for Christmas which even the most technophobic could use?

victoria, woody allen’s character (albie?) asks his father in one of his early films “how could God let the holocaust happen?” his father replies, “how should i know, i don’t know how the can opener works!”

I am looking forward to getting this app, playing it all the time :)

I would say get yourself a smart phone and download it yourself, but I guess you get bored of only connect slightly.

Speaking of which I can’t wait for the casting for the new series, I shall be applying, I’m desperate to be on the show :D

I just wanted to thank Lisa Fox for the latest wall and not making it too easy. I really liked the Don MacLean connection.

It’s really is a great app. If only to see you talking personally to me every time I run out of time …

To The Tim- A game is an excellent idea and definately something I’d buy. Less painful on the thumbs :)

Vicky, the latest hand you posted in the Guardian blog:

[ ] Bad beat
[x] Horrendous call

I hope for everyone’s sake you don’t play the online cash games?  You would probably berate the few fish that are left!

Just to add that there are rumours that an Android version is in the works, so please be patient and we’ll let you know if and when it’ll be released.

The Tim at 6:29 pm on October 26th, 2011

I’m sure it’s good - it’s just that I don’t happen to have an iPad.

Victoria’s Biggest Fan - have you tried placing an advert on Facebook/Twitter or do you already have a team?

The Tim at 7:01 pm on October 27th, 2011

Android version? You mean like a robot Victoria Coren which stands beside you saying ‘Well done, you’ve solved the wall.’

BenButton at 10:14 am on October 29th, 2011

I don’t see the need for the live connecting wall as the TV show is broadcast. Those of us with brains merely record the show and just press pause as the walls come up. Simple pimple. My mum, who is a fancy pants, just pauses the TV as she has skyplus.
Question: Why am I really good at doing some of the walls and just hopelessly awful at others?

Another question: Have you ever had one (or some) of the posters from here take part in OC? If not we could maybe form a team? TheTim seems like a smart enough chappie…

The Tim at 8:27 pm on October 29th, 2011

Thank God it’s not just me who pauses when the wall comes! (I also do it for the other rounds and turn the sound off.) I think most people have mixed success with the walls as the more groups you solve the easier it becomes and more confident you get.

Ben Button, I know there are some former participants on this blog - I’m not that smart but do have a mind disordered enough to get many of the answers before the contestants.

Vicky, why can’t people comment on your poker entries on your Guardian page? I love your columns on non-poker stuff, but there are just so many inaccuracies in what you say in your poker blog that it’d be good to get some debate going.

Is the restriction because of the potential for trolls talking about the sins of gambling? If so I understand, but surely there is a moderator? There is huge potential there if you open up the comments section in my opinion.

Victoria Coren at 12:02 am on November 3rd, 2011

Hi Ben. I’ve got to be honest, I’m relieved there are no comments on that page! Have you ever read comments on the Guardian website? (Not just on my Observer column, but pretty much anything). It’s like people target the site to be horrible, drowning out anyone who wants to have a reasoned debate. I don’t look at them any more - which is a shame, because I don’t get to engage with the reasonable debaters, but I’d rather never see the horrid stuff.

To discuss my poker columns or argue with the content or anything like that, try the Hendon Mob forum  - they put my Guardian column up every Wednesday (with the title “Guardian series” plus that weeks subject) end there’s usually a bit of debate and disagreement underneath. I’m not saying NOBODY’S horrid there (trolls come and go), but there’s usually a bit more reason and point to the comments.

BenL at 12:44 pm on November 4th, 2011

Hi Vicky, just checked out the Hendon Mob forum… eh… with all respect to the regular posters there it’s no 2+2 on the debate front. Do you post on 2+2 at all? All the best players in the world post on there, it’s pretty much the mecca for poker discussion. Would be fun to see you to start a thread or two there in future.

like, sorry for not shouting, but, really—write a letter c/o the observer newspaper?  just to say re your rude comedic health of november sixth, 2011, I AGREE.  by the time you read this, if you ever do, women will probably be convinced shakespeare was the earl of oxford and writing theses to that effect on the way back from iceland.  happy hibernation!  see you in the spring, perhaps.

Want to be put in your place by an intellectually superior woman?
Well, there’s an app for that.

Just wondering if there’s a PokerStars app on the cards* at all? I couldn’t find one on itunes…

*sorry
