hmm… a lot of bands there.

Clyde at 9:27 pm on July 24th, 2009

French fries, French doors, French kiss and Dawn French?

Rad at 10:40 pm on July 24th, 2009

Clyde - not *quite* there but almost…

adam bridge at 11:33 pm on July 24th, 2009

i like it clyde but I think french doors are windows, gives me:

dawn, windows, fries, kiss = french
galaxy, magic, virgin, heart = FM radio stations
hole, free, doors, poison = bands

but maybe i’ve fallen into a trap because i can’t see a connection between champagne, wall, lightning and cigarettes

Dan at 12:33 am on July 25th, 2009

maybe it’s white, as in white lightning, white champagne…

Are they getting tougher?

Rad at 12:59 am on July 25th, 2009

Adam - you have all four groupings and three of the connections correct… it’s now a case of finding the connection between the final four (it’s not white.  Perhaps it’s a leeeetle obscure, but I’m sure someone will get it).

Dan at 2:03 am on July 25th, 2009

Cigarettes and Alcohol, Champagne Supernova, Wonderwall, and Shock of the Lightning. Oasis songs?

Paul at 4:55 am on July 25th, 2009

Final four all feature in Oasis song titles: CHAMPAGNE supernova, wonderWALL, shock of the LIGHTNING, and CIGARETTES & alcohol.

Dan Boxall at 8:29 am on July 25th, 2009

They’re Oasis songs

Champagne (Supernova)
(Wonder) wall
Cigarettes (& Alcohol)
(The Shock Of The) Lightning

Kerry at 8:53 am on July 25th, 2009

Is it Oasis?

spanther22 at 9:51 am on July 25th, 2009

champagne, wall, lightning and cigarettes

is it oasis singles? champagne supernova wonderwall, cigarettes and alcohol and the shock of the lightning (had to google the last one)

Martin at 11:26 am on July 25th, 2009

OK, this is a bit of a stretch, but is the final connection songs by Oasis:

CHAMPAGNE Supernova
WonderWALL
CIGARETTES and Alcohol
The Shock of the LlGHTNING (which is apparently the first single from their last album, although it completely passed me by - had to find that one on Wikipedia)

I’ll admit it’s kind of tenuous.

Noel at 12:01 pm on July 25th, 2009

Oasis songs?

Chanpagne Supernova, WonderWall, The Shock Of The Lightning, Cigarettes & Alchohol.

MODERATOR at 12:50 pm on July 25th, 2009

Rad has emailed to say that he’s away this weekend but the correct final connection, if anyone gets it, is Oasis songs. And lots did - have put them all up for fairness’ sake!

Dan at 1:51 pm on July 25th, 2009

Virgin is getting too much advertising on these boards.

I wish I’d looked into Oasis.  Thought “Cigarettes and alcohol” about 100 times, probably along with everyone else.

adam bridge at 4:14 pm on July 25th, 2009

i think this is an easy one, but it did get a little obscure. Once you are started, it should all fall into place.

HULK/ PAGES/ MR FANTASTIC/ GUN

AFTER MEALS/ CYCLOPS/ PHANTOM/ KING

PIANISSIMO/ INVISIBLE WOMAN/ BLOOD PRESSURE/ CORPORATION

SAINTS/ SHARK-BOY AND LAVA-GIRL/ SCHUTZSTAFFEL/ SPIDERMAN

firank at 7:19 pm on July 25th, 2009

I don’t know what’s sadder. That people use Google and Wikipedia for answers, or that they openly boast about it. I may be missing something, but where’s the fun in that? Not so much a test of knowledge, more a test of research skills.

Victoria Coren at 8:13 pm on July 25th, 2009

It doesn’t look easy to me! I don’t know where to start with any of them…

Phil M at 11:44 pm on July 25th, 2009

Easy? This one is too hard. I think clues needed. Is there an “operation” one - I think that might go before Hulk, Phantom and Cyclops, maybe Spiderman as well?

Mike L at 11:51 pm on July 25th, 2009

Well there must be 4 superheroes there…
Hulk, Spiderman, Phantom, Mr Fantastic?

adam at 12:38 am on July 26th, 2009

sorry phil not operation. i assure you once you get started it should all fall into place. however, the blood pressure clue is probably too obscure so you could have “40th US president” as an easier alternative.

Muinimula at 2:37 pm on July 26th, 2009

There’s some connection with double letters maybe…?
pianissimo = pp
Schutzstaffel = ss

A few of the superheroes have double initials too (Spiderman = Peter Parker, Hulk = Bruce Banner, Mr Fantastic = Reed Richards).

I may be completely wrong, but this may point someone in the right direction!

adam at 5:24 pm on July 26th, 2009

good start muinimula

Dan at 6:21 pm on July 26th, 2009

Following that clue:

pp - pianissimo, spiderman, pages, after meals

ss - schutzstaffel, invisible woman, saints, cyclops

bb - hulk, gun, corporation, king

rr - 40th president, mr fantastic, phantom, shark boy and lava girl

(after meals = post prandial, invisible woman = sue storm, cyclops - polyphemus, rolls royce phantom, shark boy directed by robert rodriguez)

I’d defy any to get that without the internet!

MarkP at 6:25 pm on July 26th, 2009

Hulk, Gun, After Meals, King –BB
Pages, Phantom, Pianissimo, Spiderman – PP
Mr Fantastic, Ronald Reagan, Shark- Boy, Corporation – RR
Cyclops, Invisible Woman, Saints, Schutzstaffel –SS
And yes, I had to cheat and look up them up on Wiki.

adam at 7:20 pm on July 26th, 2009

mark and dan congrats to both, with or without wiki, between you both you have it.
hulk (Bruce Banner) corporation (BBC) BBgun BBKing
pages (pp) pianissimo (pp) spiderman (Peter Parker) after meals (post prandial)
cyclops(Scott Summers (X-men))invisible woman(Susan Storm) saints (ss) schutzstaffel (SS)
shark boy(director Robert Rodriuez) phantom (Rolls Royce) mr fantastic (Reed Richards) 40th president (Ronald Reagan) and rr is a fairly archaic measure of blood pressure.
Guess i had a misspent youth.
