Victoria Coren Mitchell - Writer, Broadcaster & Poker Player

Short And Sweet

Thursday, 14 April 2011

Now here’s an excellent way to pass a couple of minutes. Why did I never know about it before? Two of my all-time favourite things in the one delicious package. I already put this link on Twitter, but I’m worried I did it too early in the morning and poker players wouldn’t have been up to enjoy it. I came in from the Vic pretty late last night myself, but have to be awake for a meeting.

I know, this is not the most in-depth blog post of all time. But I promise it’s worth clicking…

Brilliant.

Two of your all-time favourite things in one delicious package, cigarettes and whisky? At least you wont have to worry about saving for a pension!
ps: when is that annoying “flash” advert being taken down?  i’ve bought and read the book, had my comments deleted (no explanation!) you can leave the lovely photo, but pleae ditch the ad.

Ah - I thought it was going to be that Daily Squee video of a cat playing with a dolphin. Oh well ... 8)

The Tim at 12:02 pm on April 14th, 2011

Great, I but I’ve still always preferred that Swedish chef.

jim carr at 4:32 pm on April 14th, 2011

Victoria, you would give up a chance to play in a EPT tournament in order to watch the royal wedding on tv? with apologies to the late victor meldrew,” I DONT BELIEVE IT!” i would sooner be a tank driver in libya, than watch any wedding, with the possible exception of yours to michael winner.  xx

Julian at 6:56 pm on April 14th, 2011

Statler and Waldorf were always my faves.

Gambling & Smoking?
Smoky Carriages & Older Men?
Ghosts & Trains?
Beards and Shabby Clothes?
Philosophers & Country and Western Singers?

C’mon, spill the beans.

The Tim at 8:25 pm on April 14th, 2011

Jim Carr: if you value your nose I hope you don’t run into any Libyan tank drivers.

JoeK at 9:39 pm on April 14th, 2011

Actually, it wraps up a huge amount of nice stuff in a package for me. Booze and fags being a mighty necessity of course, but as a fan of Kenny Rogers’ bushy beard and Muppets too, the link registered a nice royal flush on my ‘like’ meter.

Did you see what I did there? God, I’m so very very lonely…

Jonathan at 9:46 pm on April 14th, 2011

It’s the whole dying in your sleep thing that I have an issue with… I kinda always hoped for more?

David Young at 8:20 am on April 15th, 2011

That was all very sweet, Vicky, but what was his 4-bet shove range?

jim carr at 9:34 am on April 15th, 2011

THE TIM.  give it another couple of weeks, and im more likely to run into LORD LUCAN than a libyan tank driver!

Victoria Coren at 10:12 am on April 15th, 2011

Lol DY. I think his three-bet shove range is red aces - black aces, and his four-bet shove range doesn’t exist. I know how he feels. *sigh*

This is rather straight forward, but will you marry me? Or at least go on a date? :P
Long shot, I know, but a man’s got to try now.

Victoria Coren at 7:01 pm on April 15th, 2011

19 is a bit young for me, I’m afraid. But thanks for the offer… NOW GET BACK TO YOUR STUDIES!

VM at 10:14 pm on April 15th, 2011

Since I can’t play online now, I will have to play vicariously through you…which I kind of do regardless. The way I cheered when you won 10k on stars recently, you could’ve sworn I won it myself. Good luck in the heads up match!!

Lord Lucan at 11:39 pm on April 15th, 2011

Jim Carr, I know where you live and I’m coming round now!

Jason Reichert at 5:36 am on April 16th, 2011

Vicky, hello from the land of the non-free after today’s developments. The US is so screwed up when it comes to online poker. Anyway, your link made my day…I was raised with the Muppets and watching them with Kenny Rogers put a smile on my face at the end of a pretty rough day in poker. And you always remain my favorite Brit. No marriage proposals from me though…I’ve been married for 10 years. That said, I do dream of being seated with you at a live event. Cheers from Minneapolis….

jim carr at 3:36 pm on April 16th, 2011

LORD LUCAN, if you are bringing SHERGAR with you, there is a nice park next to my flat he can have a run in.

RomanticRecluse at 12:21 pm on April 17th, 2011

Two of your all-time favourite things in the one delicious package?

Jamie Oliver and blatant right-wing propaganda?

VM at 9:24 am on April 18th, 2011

It sounds like you keep the same hours that I do. I dislike mornings and meetings and do my best to avoid both. I spent a few hours yesterday watching you play. It was all I could do to get my fill. My government doesn’t want me to gamble :P I was going to ask you the same question as the student from london, I was just waiting for the right time :P I hope you’re well Vicky.

Thanks to the wonders of iPlayer I have been able to catch up on the early part (well, most actually) of Saturday Live that I missed.  Thankfully, you Victoria did get up early and journey to the BBC for our enjoyment, and well done for getting your books mentioned.
Richard Coles’ programme seemed wonderfully civilised, the sort of Radio 4 that you have been keen to defend, perhaps.  Rightly so, and I hope you felt as comfortable as you sounded.  You should definitely do more radio.
Hearing your voice makes me think “awww.. it’s Victoria”, and it gives me so much pleasure it probably shouldn’t be allowed.  Thank you for making the effort to get up early.  If you enjoyed it half as much as me, then I enjoyed it twice as much as you. (ancient Radio 4 joke)

David Young at 5:07 pm on April 18th, 2011

The song lost its appeal to me in the early years of my poker career when Dominic pointed out that you have to ‘count your money when you’re sitting at the table’ or you won’t be able to calculate implied odds.

Jim Bridge at 9:03 pm on April 20th, 2011

How about a young 52 then, Vicky?
That would be as the number of cards in a pack, so you’ll never forget how old I was when you married me! xxxxxx

The Tim at 10:07 am on April 21st, 2011

Does your security word refer to your lower age limit? In that case, how about a young 46?

Jim Bridge at 11:39 am on April 21st, 2011

Btw Vicky I noticed your birthday on wiki has been changed from ‘73 to ‘72. I hope that 72 is the right year because astrologically it would makes us much better partners
luv, xxx

The Tim at 9:52 am on April 22nd, 2011

Surely they meant to put 1982!

Norman at 4:53 pm on April 22nd, 2011

Nice to put a face to the music.  Finally lays to rest my initial idea that the song was about origami, and my struggle with the Dee Ling Stun.
I must say your music selection is rather jolly and quite enjoyable.  Much to my surprise I actually knew some of them.
Thanks for the CD prize and for bringing me some luck.
Stay lucky!
