The Guy From The Ladies’ Event (part 2)
Thursday, 26 July 2012
I’m nervous of putting up a new post because I don’t want anyone to miss the most recent reader’s comment on the previous post (from Josh, under “God I Love A Regional Waxworks Museum”) - it’s hilarious.
But I want to report that I’ve just seen a tweet I was sent a few days ago by the guy I argued with, and subsequently blogged about, in the World Series of Poker ladies’ event. He tweeted:
I am sorry for insulting you in the ladies tournament and I won’t be playing any more ladies events ever again.
**
I replied to say thanks and that it was a classy tweet, and that I was glad, and I wished him luck in his future poker career. Because it is, and I am, and I do.

Excellent!

True, but I still think you shouldn’t have played in both tournaments - even if you are fortunate enough to be a woman - that’s just having your chips and eating them too.

Wow to that, and excellent.
The Tim where do you draw the line. Vicky’s a good player but not a pro player - she’s a writer by trade. Every spectrum of ability exists, irrelevant of how they make their living ,so how do you decide who takes part? The only other option is to say women’s only events shouldn’t take place at all, but I think Vicky has covered that. It doesn’t seem that the women want the events to be limited to weaker players.

Dan, I thought that the idea of women-only event was to encourage more female players into the game, but if they’re already playing in the main competition then they clearly don’t need that encouragement and shouldn’t to play in both.

I’m curious that the ‘law’ prevents ladies making their contest exclusive yet there is a ladies golf and tennis tour that seems to exist without comment and of course there is ladies athletics and swimming, what’s the deal?

“...and putting their hands up my skirt. But it wasn’t all good news.”
Nice!

It’s great that he apologized, but I have to agree with The Tim here. It might be negligible but there’s some unfairness that women have 16 tournaments to join and guys only 15.
To press the bathroom analogy, there is no men’s room at this series. Surely enough guys have the advantage of being able to do it at a tree but women can ALWAYS put their hand on the guys’ shoulders and take a peek.
And IMO the similarity ends there. Unlike the analogy, people like you Victoria ACTUALLY DO that regularly. It’s not like guys playing poker lose absolutely no comfort in the presence of women. Being able to challenge anyone and then having a “nice” time IS having your cake and eating it too.
I think it would be much less radical to include a namesake men-only tournament than to ditch the ladies one

The Tim and Zach - you still don’t get it, do you?
Do you insist on gatecrashing Hen Nights or Mother’s Day pamper sessions?
Girls have a laugh together and feel relaxed in each others company…
...the organisers of these events understand this and cater for this market. A man forcing his way into the event acting the arse simply proves the point….women have more fun when there are no wankers around!

Ms Coren, this is off-piste for this blog entry, but I just wanted to contact you because you are a player and a journalist.
A story is brewing in connection with the Gutshot poker site. I have posted under the Gutshot rubric on the Hendon Mob site, and would encourage you to take a look. I am often in London, feel free to ask to check me over and work out whether I am being irrational or unfair.

Good for you, and glad that he’s seen the light.
And a big welcome back to Only Connect! Can’t wait!
