Woodstock Literary Festival

Thursday, September 10 2009

Next Saturday (September 19th at 12.30pm) I’ll be at the Woodstock Literary Festival in Oxfordshire to talk my about my new book, poker and life generally in conversation with columnist Matthew Norman. I don’t know what I’ll be like, but Matthew’s bound to be brilliant.

If you’d like to be at that event - maybe you live in the middle of Woodstock, and need a reason to get out of doing something else - you can buy tickets for £8 by going here or calling 01865 305305.

You can look at the whole programme for the Woodstock Litfest on this downloadable pdf. David Cameron, Mariella Frostrup, Roy Hattersley, the lot.

I myself was especially excited to see that Martin Kemp is giving a talk about “The Discovery of an Unknown Work by Leonardo da Vinci”.

But it’s not that Martin Kemp. It’s Martin Kemp the Emeritus Professor of History of Art at Oxford university. Ah well. I hear he does a lovely “Through The Barricades” in the shower.

Why is he ‘bound’ to be brilliant?

He’s OK, he’s alright but brilliant.......
Anyway, have a nice time.
I’m sure your book will be brilliant, btw.

Bad luck on Late Night Poker, you just didn’t get the cards when you needed them.

Here’s a link to Matthew Norman on my radio show Heresy. (I think this link will only work until September 14th or 15th). He was one of my favourite guests and this was one of my favourite episodes. I would certainly say he was brilliant.

Aw,c’mon, he was OK. he was alright, you were good too. But where was he brilliant?

I have always respected your honesty. Fawning is not something I expect from you. Please don’t disappoint me noe.

What the f*** are you on about drumvesta? Let her have the opinion she wants, good lord. You don’t expect fawning from her? Really? Who gives a damn what you expect from her or anyone?

Dismal.

I really love this blog, but you have some incredibly pretentious people reply Vicky (although you get lots of excellent replies as well).

Oh… now… let’s not all bicker… This is meant to be a happy place, I don’t want it to become one of those forums where the posters all shout at each other… Generally I’m really amazed and pleased with the high standard of comments posted here, I think everyone seems very smart and articulate and funny.
Thanks for your nice message though Sam, I’m really glad you like the blog.

Bugger...I see you have drawn Peter Eastgate in the PKR Heads Up challenge.
Very best of luck Vicky.

I should apologise I think. Sorry Vicky for being a bit of an arsehole the other night, I was wrong to get on my high horse just because some comment annoyed me.

Hmm. As a rather lame attempt at an apology (not knowing you personally it is hard to apologise properly), I will just recommend the book Fooled By Randomness by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, which is a book essentially about how fallible human logic is (with heavy emphasis on the markets). It has definitely influenced the way I see the world, and anyone who plays a significant amount of poker should appreciate it.

Anyway, recommending a book seems appropriate in the context of this blog entry.

“I think everyone seems very smart and articulate and funny. “

Now, that’s the sort of fawning we like! Fawning over us!!  :-)

September 19th?  Ack, I’ll be getting married that day - not really something I can excuse myself from.  Got any more PAs lined up to plug the book?
